When you call a rental company you will likely talk to one of the many representatives that have been instructed to answer all questions in a certain way; because of this, when you ask if you can use your debit card to rent a car the answer is almost always going to be no. However, this is not actually the case as there are no car rental companies that have an actual ban on the use of debit cards. The reason why they will tell you that you cannot use them is because of the additional liability that they take on when they allow it.

Typically, once you sign the rental agreement and leave your credit card information with the car rental company, they will proceed to secure funds in the event that you damage the car. With a debit card they can do the same thing, but because it is through a bank the processing time is longer and there is more room for error if a billing process is needed. For this reason many car rental companies will request a sizable cash deposit with the company in the event that something does go wrong with the vehicle and you are responsible for payment.

Fortunately, though it’s a headache to do, it is possible to pay for a rental car with your debit card. At the end of the rental period you will generally be refunded the full cash deposit and the funds that were locked in your bank account will be released so that you can use them again.
